Nov 2009  -  Safety stop with a Marlin Back to the list

Makunudu’s divers recently had an unexpected encounter too!

We spotted a Marlin during our safety stop after a nice dive at Moosa Faru!

A marlin has a spear-like snout, and a long rigid dorsal fin, which extends forward to form a crest.
The name Marlin is thought to derive from its resemblance to a sailor's marlinspike.

It grows up to about 4 meters length and 600 kg of weight. Marlins, often better known as Swordfish, are rarely seen while diving, it is more common to see them jumping on the surface during a boat ride.

Given the fact that they are able to reach a speed of about 110 km/h (68 m/ph) it was just natural that we only had the pleasure of watching it for a few seconds... a short but splendid view.
