South-east monsoon make to the pass around Biyadoo an out-going current movement.
This influences the visibility, but gave us two dramatic spectacles.
The first one
that everybody knows is the arrival of the Manta Rays. You can read about that on
our May article. The second spectacle that just a few divers know happens on the
dive site called Kandooma Thila (or Ranthila).
With the right out-going current
condition, the right behavior and a bit of fortune we can see the Grey Reef Shark
cleaning station.
This is a dive suitable only for Advanced Divers or more. We jump
into the blue and we drift in the middle of the pass until we reach, at -18 meters,
the thila.
At first we see some huge schools of Snapper, Jack Fish and Trevallies;
meanwhile Eagle Rays, White Tip Sharks and Dog Tooth Tuna can pass by. The walls
of the thila are topped of beautiful Alcyonaria and all around a multitude of fishes,
but everybody's waiting to reach the Grey Reef Sharks.
During the drift, with current
permission, we can go on the channel to try to find the Sharks swimming. Once we
spot them we can see these magnificent animals slowly swimming around us and admire
their beautiful movement. But then at -27 meters we arrive at a small terrace where
we can see the Sharks in an unusual (for us) position: the cleaning station.
Grey Reef sharks are very shy, we must arrive there very soft and stay very close to
the bottom and not too close to the edge; once the sharks get confident with us
they start the dance: they arrive, they hovering a bit and then they stand vertical
with open mouth.
At this point many fishes start to clean their teeth and their
gills.
Please: remember to never hold your breath once there.
