With the change of season the sea currents come from West to East passing through
the whole of South Male Atoll and collecting big quantities of plankton in the process
before they reach its most Eastern side. This process takes place annually bringing
the mantas back to Biyadoo’s side of the atoll. Last year at the beginning of April
mantas were already here, this year we have had to wait a bit longer but, loyal
to their yearly date, they finally showed up once more a few days ago.
It is always a pleasure to watch these majestic animals while the go on about their
cleaning or mating rituals. We are lucky enough to have a cleaning station just
fifteen minutes away from the island were we can observe and enjoy the company of
these creatures usually until November. If you happen to be in Biyadoo during the
next few months this is an experience you should not miss.
